Prep Course Offered for Police Test

July 22, 2019 | Bureau of Police Department of Public Safety

The Lancaster NAACP, the Lancaster City Bureau of Police, the School District of Lancaster, and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology are collaborating on a preparatory course for individuals interested in applying for the city police recruitment testing process. The pilot course will meet at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, 750 E. King St. It will run for five consecutive Saturday mornings  from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. It will begin on Saturday, July 27, and continue on August 3, 20, 17, and 24.

Experienced educators, skilled in test preparation instruction, will teach the course. They will address reading comprehension, as well as basic math, writing, and language skills. Participants will have the opportunity to take practice tests.

Teaching support for the program comes from the School District of Lancaster.

Superintendent Dr. Damaris Rau said, “I am very proud of our collaboration with the NAACP and the Lancaster Police Department. We hope this encourages City residents to consider applying to become a police officer in their own community. I am grateful we have SDoL educators volunteering and giving back to the community in this special program.”

Blanding Watson, president of Lancaster NAACP, said, “It is the desire of the Lancaster NAACP to provide ongoing, collaborative support to the City of Lancaster, in order to increase diversity and inclusion in the recruitment process for the Bureau of Police. The branch is committed to continual monitoring and modification of the initiative in order to meet the needs of all partners.”

Jarrad Berkihiser, Chief of Police for the City of Lancaster and chairperson of the Lancaster County Chiefs of Police Hiring Consortium, appreciates this collaborative effort between the NAACP and the city and county police agencies.

“Police departments are looking for dedicated people to serve their communities and approach the profession as a calling to serve,” said Chief Berkihiser.
