This winter, be mindful of what type of salt you're using to deice sidewalks. Some types of salt can damage concrete surfaces. In addition, a significant portion of the stormwater within the City drains into the sewer system and subsequently makes it to the wastewater treatment plant. Any deicer with acetate would be the least desired for the sewer system, and the City does not allow anti-skid material to be used, such as sand. As a first choice we recommend salt made with potassium chloride or with magnesium chloride as an alternate to minimize damage to concrete surfaces. Also please apply these products at rates per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
