The City’s Annual Street Leaf Collection Program will begin on October 20 and continue through mid December, weather permitting. Leaves are collected differently depending on where they fall. Leaves falling into streets are collected with city sweeping equipment. This service is not intended to be used for the collection of leaves that have fallen on sidewalks and private property. Residents should not rake leaves into street-side gutters.
Street sweeping leaf collection follows the twice monthly street sweeping schedule except on certain major thoroughfares that are designated for weekly cleaning (King, Orange, Queen, Prince and Manor Streets and Highland Avenue). All residents on the twice monthly schedule should check their local street signs to confirm their pickup date on the first and third weeks or second and fourth weeks of the month. City holidays fall on Election Day (November 4) and Thanksgiving (November 27 and 28). Leaf collection will not occur on these holidays, but will resume for those missed streets on the next regularly scheduled street sweeping/leaf collection day.
Leaves falling in the yards of private property will also be collected, but must be placed in the 30-gallon paper yard waste bags that are available free of charge at any of the following locations: Treasury Office at 39 West Chestnut Street, City Hall at 120 North Duke Street, Bureau of Streets at 515 North Franklin Street, and the Recycling Drop-Off Center at 850 New Holland Avenue. Bagged leaves will be collected by Penn Waste, the City’s trash contractor, according to the trash collection schedule on alternating weeks of November 3, November 17 and December 1. Leaves should not be placed in plastic bags.
Residents are also reminded that general street cleaning operations continue year-round and parking restrictions are enforced throughout all seasons. For more information regarding street cleaning and leaf collection, please contact the Bureau of Streets at (717) 291-4835.
Please be aware that limbs and branches should never be placed in gutters or along curbs since they cause damage to collection equipment. There is a separate recycling program for yard waste between April and October. Please contact the Solid Waste Hotline at (717) 291-4744 or SWHotline@cityoflancasterpa.com for details and schedule.
